You'll have an antibody that will bind to that bacterium. For example, if you have a bacterium, I'm drawing one here, If you remember from the immune system, your body has something called antibodies, and it uses theseĪntibodies to fight things that it doesn't want in the body. If you remember from the immune system, there's something called an antibody.

Who has this kind of blood that only has As on your blood cells, then it turns out that youĬan't get a blood transfusion from someone who has this For example, it turns out,Īnd we'll explain this, but for example, it turns out that if you are the kind of person Just give any blood to anyone, and it has to do with Put a needle in your vein and pump blood into your veins. If you've lost enough blood, they'll give you a transfusion of blood. Let's say you got in a car accident and you lost a lot of blood. These As and these Bs, is that in medicine, we often have to give blood transfusions. The reason why we care about this and why I'm talking about Have all kinds of other proteins and molecules embedded Out the last possibility? Some people have neither A nor B. People would have only the B, and some people, can you figure Might have only the A, or, as you can imagine, some Some people do have both,īut some have only one. Molecules, these glycolipids, on their red blood cells. What's interesting, is that not all people have both of these Glycolipids, glyco meaning a sugar group, lipid meaning a fat group, so it's some kind of They are actually somethingĬalled glycolipids, which I actually didn't realize at first. Molecules and not proteins because they're actually not proteins. Happy with those names, not too hard to remember. We're going to talk about, and those are the A There are two of them that are sort of more important than the others, at least for this topic that Which I'm drawing here, that have all kinds ofĭifferent functions. There's all kinds of proteins and molecules, some of Layer of this red blood cell? Since it's a cell, it has a cell membrane, and that's made up of lipids. Some Rh antigens are more "antigenic" or more likely to cause an immune reaction then others.

There are actually hundreds of blood types, and even many Rh antigens. Some things are not as simple as we expect, and transfusion medicine has a lot of interesting details. The amount of antibody will increase with each subsequent Rh+ pregnancy. With Rh antigen, the first exposure, the Rh negative (Rh-) mother has to be exposed to a Rh+ pregnancy prior to making IgM and then subsequent Rh+ pregnancies will cause IgG to be made, which can cross the placenta and cause hemolysis of the fetal red blood cells. Rh factor is a minor antigen and a person does need exposure to prior to making IgM and then IgG antibodies. So an infant with Type A blood would start producing antibodies against B antigens. My highest recommendation for anyone wishing to further their education in an organized, interesting and thought provoking manner. The maturing immune system of an infant actually does start making IgM antibodies against the "foreign major antigens" by 2 months of age and does not need a blood transfusion to start that process.

The faculty for the Professional conference was filled with leaders in the physical therapy field. The conference was a highlight of my experience as the material discussed was thought provoking and covered a wide range of topics. I enjoyed the ability to confer with my cohort in the discussion board and meet most of them at the Professional conference. There were no surprises once the academic calendar was released if you followed the syllabus. Most sections had a textbook and/or reading material well defined. The CD lectures followed the syllabus and were easy to understand. I enjoyed the “learn as you go” format that allowed me to study at my own pace and review material as needed. The courses were in a logical manner and were easy to follow. The experience I had with the tDPT program through The University of Montana exceeded my expectations in all ways.
